This seems to me like a money grab. With all due respect to ImmoralMinority, this is why people don’t like lawyers.
Is this part of an overzealous 24 hr news cycle, yes. Is this worth 250 million? Not a chance. Will the Post settle for significantly less, the kid gets some cash, and the lawyers get their chunk? Yes. I’m calling my shot.

So kid faces off with native American during a protest , news media interprets it several ways, social media several more ways. Now the school wants money? Is that about the long and the short of it?

The news cycle never fails to amaze me. Take a hot-button “story” and pummel it to oblivion for weeks on end.
Wars? Upcoming recession? Regressive rights? Wage gap? Reckless spending by citizens and government alike? MEH.

This must be those bootstraps the liars have been talking about so much.
What was reported that was false? I mean, if a Diocese clears someone, that’s pretty much an admission that the person isn’t clear. For being such tough brave patriotic self-made har dworking real Murkans in Magachoad hats, they sure are sensitive.

The Newsroom (HBO show) addresses this problem.
(Fair warning, it may come off as holier than thou some times, but it is quite honest and riveting)
The TV channels were required by law to present the daily news in an hour long slot with zero commercialization as a service to the American public, in return for the privilege of broadcasting rights.
As soon as this law was removed, all hell broke lose. What’s more, all society has developed a reduced attention span, which combines poorly with the need to fill 24 hours of air time. This has all been a fatal blow to investigative journalism.
Now, its all about sensationalism and sound bites at best (All other news channels). At its worst, it is propaganda, intentionally selective coverage to push pre-selected narrative, disingenuous opinion shows and hyperbole (Fox).
Thanks Obama! /s
Quick update: The OJ chase was a monumental “paradigm shift” (I know, I hate that term too) in modern news. It just goes to show if people tune in for anything on any channel, it will do more of that. It’s like a real life action movie in the middle of news broadcast.
Police chases are much more common now, but they are not news. The report of an arrest, danger to public and traffic conditions should be the only thing news were concerned with up until then. Its like - Imagine if you could sell a PhD thesis on STDs much better by including a love story of one of the subjects .

I think that they sue for 250 knowing they are gonna l ose, but WaPo would settle for 5-10 to make the bad publicity go away instead of letting this drag along for too long. That way this insufferable kid will be an insufferable trust fund college kid in two years. The parents had quite the strategy.
That’s how patent trolling works, so it might be the same thing.

Then add Twitter and 1) the race the publish stories lest they lose any of those sweet, sweet social media shares and 2) lazy use of tweets by random outliers as representative of public opinion.
The latter is one of my biggest pet peeves. No one cares about what @colliemolester69 thinks about education reform, that’s why @colliemolester69 spends all day tweeting.

I love The Newsroom. If that opening scene isn’t one of the greatest things you’ve ever seen, then I don’t know what would be. I remember having a conversation with Mrs. Humpkins sometime in late 2016 about how I felt that it was 4 years too early.
Not to mention, the characters brought up some really good points and ideas on that show.

Twitter is not news. No social media is news.

I’m no fan of MAGA hats, but...
Apparently, the truth is that the kid did NOT square up to the old man; the old man approached the kid and got in HIS face. What you see in the video is the two, nose to nose, but that interaction was NOT started by the kid.
But the media ran with this narrative of the MAGA kid and his cohort instigating trouble. No, they were there being smug little shits, but they were NOT ins ti gating. And when WaPo vilified MAGA kid, he and his family were doxxed and death threats were made against him and his family. Kathy Griffin literally called for this kid’s death on Twitter. She has a platform. That’s scary as fuck when someone who’s credentials are “I’ve been on TV” can whip up enough frenzy to threaten the life of someone by their tweets alone.
Even after the truth was brought to light, loud-mou th s like Bill Mahe r were still pushing the wrong narrative.
Again, I don’t defend Trump supporters for being Trump supporters , but this kid (kid, mind you, just a teenager, which his whole life ahead of him ) and his family are literally in fear of their lives now. I don’t know how to put a price tag on that, but that’s for the judge to decide.

Yeah, the media definitely seemed to jump on the wrong narrative. But I really don’t know how much at the forefront this still is for anyone but those directly involved. And to get 250 million for this seems insane. I could understand maybe a 100k or so, along with an apology from those that pushed a false narrative. That’s shitty of them. But it’s also shitty of that kid to show up wearing a hat that would obviously spark controversy. What possible other purpose could he have had? None.
In other words I think it’s preposterous that this school and those involved should be made multi millionaires.

Yeah be that as it may, the kid also used his hat as a way to instigate controversy at the protest. I don’t feel he and his family deserve to become multi millionaires over this. Sure, they deserve an apology from those that blindly ran with a false narrative, but they weren’t so terribly wronged that they need to be ele vated to the 1% of this country.

The whole group of MAGA kids were getting into it with the black hebrew israelites (who were the ones who started it) , the Indian guy got in the middle of it, and the kids stood around him staring him down. T he sensible thing would’ve been for the chaperones to say, “hey kids, let’s quit messing with these weirdos and move somewhere else.”
The mere fact that they had been bussed in to DC to go to an anti-abortion rally in their MAGA hats makes them assholes to begin with.

Again, they’re seeking $250M... doesn’t mean they’ll get it. That’s for the judge to suss out. Not only does this involve what preceded the incident (like a group of kids in MAGA hats showi ng up at an existing rally), but also what comes after - like will this kid be able to be employed some day, due to all the false negative press he rec ei ved? Will the family someday come into harm for this? There’s a lot to weight out, and we are not the ones to put a price on all that.
I agree, showing up to counter-protest is a quick way to get into a fight, but we cannot allow people’s lives to be threatened in this way, regardless of their political stance , by people who were not even there at the rally, by left-leaning celebrities with active twitter bases, and especially by news organizations purporting to have “journalistic integrity”.
Either way, nobody is right when you’re threatening a 16yo with death for being an asshole.

Have you been following this situation at all?
Phillips approached Sandman and started beating a drum and chanting in his face. Sandman stood motionless and smiled. Then Phillips lied to reporters and claimed that the kids made racist remarks to him and attacked the Black Israelites, despite video evidence confirming Sandman said nothing at all and his peers only sang their school spirit song. The video confirms that no group was attacked, but that Phillips invaded Sandman’s personal space and that the Black Israelites directed racist and homophobic slurs at the students .
So, y es, the media lied . Even if you argue that t hey truthfully reported the false narrative given by Phillips, the video evidence disproves his story from every angle. And seeing as the headline photo is a screenshot from the video itself, the media had ample evidence from the get-go to know the full story.

With our news cycle, I bet all but those that were directly involved still think about this. However he will pop up if you Google him. So maybe in that sense he deserves something . But I think maybe it shouldn’t be monetary.
Either way, nobody is right when you’re threatening a 16yo with death for being an asshole.
Certainly not, but perhaps they should be punished rather than making this family wealthy beyond their wildest dreams. My motivation for being so against giving them all kinds of money is that I just do not like the litigious nature of this country, the fact that you can achieve some semblance of the American Dream simply by suing, sometimes it’s justified, but often it’s ridiculous . Nor do I like the divisiveness between left and right, because that’s why we are where we are now with this particular mess. It happens day in day out, each side is constantly busy trying to find ways to disparage and put down the other. And all of our views are much more nuanced than that.
But yeah... I’m being idealistic here.

I’ve always hated the opening scene. I generally appreciate being able to remove oneself from titles and being critical of America to make it better.
However, it is also so full of condescending crap. I especially hated how he says that girl is from the “ worst generation ever period ever period”. Get over it. Almost every shot fired by boomers at millennials is a reflection of their own failings.
He does what lots of people who he is criticizing do, he romanticizes the past. He says that America was great by a bunch of subjective criteria and defines it as not the greatest by objective ones.
I like that he is encouraging critical thinking but hate how the scene paints in broad brushes of, “young people are awful” and back in the day, platitudes . Never ending middle eastern wars, increasing incarceration rates, struggling education systems, inadequate health care; those are things millennials live with- not things they set policies in place to cause.
Not to mention the interaction seems to be kind of sexist towards the girl. Calling her a “sorority girl”, saying “stumble into a voting booth”. Young eager nervous women can be smart informed citizens.

Not intently.
Ah yes, the youtube video which shows absolutely every aspect of the d ay. As far as I know, there’s conveniently no video of interaction between the affluenzites and Israelites before their outburst either.
This isn’t about “the media” though, it is about a specific outlet. Seems odd he’s only chasing WaPo when the story was viral before that source got into it, and for IIRC the exact amount of money Bezos paid for the paper. Sucking up to 45, without a doubt, if 45 isn’t egging it on himself. There’s a definite political bent here, it’d be interesting to see an expose of the kid’s father. Process of discovery should also be interesting.
And if he thinks a target was on him before, well, lololol

Sorry, I was kind of unclear, I was referring to the people that ran with a false narrative to the point of death threats, that should not be okay. Although it may be a slippery slope too, with free speech and all. But I don’t know the finer points of that.

Did their platform as a wide-reaching journalistic publication cause him to be threatened? Yes.

It’s certainly not without its faults, I’d never argue that it is perfect. Of course it’s full of condescension the whole show is, and of course it’s all up it’s own ass, it’s Aaron Sorkin. That doesn’t mean there aren’t good ideas and points within it.
Look, every generation thinks that one of the younger generations is the worst. Personally, I’m barely a millennial and I think a lot of millennials are honestly terrible. Sure, they/we didn’t put anything into place that resulted in where we were then/are now, and we’re just living with them, and yes
previous generations had qualities/situations where I could generalize and say they’re the worst (or at least terrible) but honestly, millennials are, to me, pretty insufferable.
Again, though it has it’s faults, I think there’s a general message of the
whole scene that
is spot on and fantastic. As far as him being sexist, yeah, the character probably was.
